The 14th Annual Halloweensie Writing Contest aahhhrrrooooOOOO!!!

Hair of bat and witch’s ear! It’s time for. . .

The 14th Annual Halloweensie Writing Contest!!!

~ for children’s writers ~

THE CONTEST: write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (children here defined as 12 and under) (title not included in word count) using the words tiptoe, goblin, and chill.

  • Your story can be poetry or prose, scary, funny, sweet, or anything in between, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words and is 100 words. Get it? Halloweensie – because it’s not very long and it’s for little people 😊
  • You can go under the word count but not over!
  • Title is not included in the word count.
  • You may use the words in any form i.e. tiptoe, tiptoeing, tiptoed, chills, chilling, etc. 😊
  • You are welcome to enter more than one entry – just remember you’ll be competing against yourself 😊
  • No illustration notes please!

And yes, I know 100 words is short, but that’s part of the fun and the challenge! 😊

POST: your story in the comment section below between right now this very second and 11:59PM Eastern Thursday October 31st (So you have 3 full days to post – Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.)

  • For those of you who would also like to post on your blogs, please feel free to do so! You are welcome to include the link to your blog with your entry in the comment section of the Official Contest Post so that people can come visit your blog, but all entries must be posted in the comment section of the Official Contest Post between 12:01 AM Eastern Tuesday October 29th and Thursday October 31st at 11:59PM Eastern.
  • If you have difficulty posting your entry to the comments, which unfortunately sometimes happens, you may email your entry to me and I’ll post it for you! [susanna[at]susannahill[dot]com Please place your entry in the body of the email including your title, byline (that means who the story is by – you! – so for example, By Jane Doe) and word count at the top NO ATTACHMENTS!
  • I know how hard you all work on your entries, and how anxious you are to get them posted, but please try to be a little patient if your entry doesn’t show up immediately. Many comments have to be manually approved, and it sometimes takes me a little while to post entries that come in by email. In addition, I can’t add the links until 51 entries are posted or they get messed up and have to be redone. I promise I will get to everything as soon as I can. I try never to leave my desk during contests, but sometimes it’s unavoidable 😊

THE JUDGING: over the following days, my devoted assistants and I will read and re-read and narrow down the entries to a finalist field of about 12 which will be posted here for you to vote on as soon as I can get them up! The winners will be announced a couple days after the voting to give everyone time to vote.

Judging criteria will be as follows:

  • 1. Kid-appeal! – These stories are intended for a young audience (ages 12 and under), so we’re looking for stories that children will enjoy and relate to.
  • 2.  Halloweeniness – the rules state a Halloween story, so it must be crystal clear that the story is about Halloween, not just some random spooky night.
  • 3. Use of all 3 required words and whether you came it at 100 words or less.
  • 4. Quality of story – entries must tell a story, including a main character of some kind and a true story arc even if it’s tiny 😊  Entries must not be merely descriptions or mood pieces.
  • 5. Quality of Writing: check your spelling, grammar, punctuation etc.  If you’re going to rhyme, give us your best 😊  Use and flow of language, correctness of mechanics, excellence of rhyme and meter if you use it, PROOFREADING!
  • 6. Originality and creativity – because that is often what sets one story above another.
  • 7. How well you followed the Submission Guidelines – agents and editors expect professionalism. This is a chance to practice making sure you read and follow specified guidelines. If you don’t follow agent and editor submission guidelines, they won’t even read your submission.

    THE GOBBLIN’ GOBLIN

    By: Carla Gullett

    Word count: 100

    Goblin and Igor loved Halloween.

    The tricks. The treats.

    The thrills. The chills.

    The creepies. The crawlies.

    And the costumes!

    “Let’s carve jack-o-lanterns,” Igor said.

They gathered pumpkins and set to work.

“These look too cute,” Goblin grumbled.

“Let’s carve scary ones,” said Igor.

    So, they carved witches, warlocks,

    and werewolves.

They made a mountain of monsters

    and a tower of terror.

But when Igor stood on tiptoe to add the finishing touch…

    CRASH!

“Oh no,” Igor cried. “I made a mushy mess.”

“No problem,” grinned Goblin. “You go back to carving, and since I’m starving…

    I’ll get gobblin’!”

    BURP!

    The Halloween Parade

    Alyssa Londoño

    90 words

    It’s almost time

    Costumes on…

    Take a deep breathe

    and

    Get

    in

    line

    One…Two…Three..

    All these unfamiliar

    parent eyes on me

    My chills have started

    What if I fall?

    Should I tiptoe forward?

    Or not move at all?

    Holding on tight to

    My friend the Goblin

    Phones, flashes, everywhere

Wow, look at all those smiles and stares

    Then I see her…

    I know she’s near

    “HI MOMMA”

    There goes my fear

    Her face lights up

    With shining delight

    “You got this baby!”

    I know she’s right

    Then it’s over

Artists Interests by Lorraine McCown (WC: 97)

Goblinocchio was sad, for his Geppetto had given him 6 fingered hands, a nose that screamed “I’m lying”, and unfinished parts – seemingly, the mid journey of a sculptor interrupted.

Artists heard Goblinocchio’s cries to be a real goblin, and flocked to remove the grotesque marks of heartlessness. Not one, but many real goblins were teased out from the mangled mash of aggregated abilities, while misguided maladies were rebuked and removed.

Artists reunited with old goblin friends as they tiptoed out of the ailing algorithm. Chills swept through the group as the last chisel revealed… the Tin Man!

    The Costume Contest

I won the costume contest, but I can’t accept the prize. “What’s your name?” I shake my head. If I speak, they’ll know. “Take off your mask.” I shake my head. There is no mask to remove. They are waiting to announce the winner, but I can’t reveal the truth. They are holding the prize. I don’t eat candy anyway. I slink away on tiptoe into the chill of night. It is fun to be seen, if just for Halloween. The witches, fairies and princesses look fine, but their costumes can’t compare to a real goblin.

In the deep dark Snickerwood Grove, a secret market awaits.

Where mischievous, magical creatures sell their enchanted goods.

This Halloween, Bumblegruff the goblin has a special chilled juice just for YOU!

He promises one sip will make your buckets overflow with…

    Ooey gooey Gobstoppers.

    Super sizzling sours.

    Bubblicious bubble-gum.

    Gummies galore.

    Werewolf chocolate.

    Boo treats.

    But after one sip…

    Your body begins to creak.

You sprout a unibrow, thick and dark.

Your teeth turn yellow, spiky and sharp.

Your skin glows a ghoulish purple.

And your feet only walk on tiptoe.

    Oh no!

    No treats for you!

    Only Bumblegruff’s trick!

Princesses and ballerinas parade from house to house. I creep closer. “Cool costume!” yells an astronaut. “Come with us!” Someone hands me an extra bag. I am swept along, finally part of the group. “Trick or Treat!” We jostle and giggle, holding out our bags. A pirate grins. “I like your mask.” I’m glad it’s dark, so they can’t see there is no goblin mask. That’s just me.

THE HISTORY OF THE GOBLIN KING AND THE JELLIED BEAN
    by ere
    (98 words)

On Halloween of seventeen a chill entombed the air.
The witches and the wizards roamed free without a care.

Faerie folk and pixies, leprechaun and gnome,
tiptoed in a circle around the goblin’s throne.

“We bend the knee, and pledge allegiance, to the King of all Unseen!
And we offer up these mortals that taste like jellied beans.”

The goblin craved a gnawing of a mortal playing dead.
Then screamed in pain when the mortal bit his nose instead.

On Halloween of seventeen the goblin king did die.
And the mortals played the goblins for the Halloweenie Prize!

“Chill,” dad grumbled. “It’s tiptoeing just fine.”

But it wasn’t. It was wrong and it was terrible.

When dad opened the cage door, the things eyes widened. It tried to run on its toe-tips but collapsed in a heap.

    “That’ll never pirouette,” I sighed. “It’s stupid.”

“It’s not stupid.”

    Halloween was ruined.

    “Honey — we’re getting close.”

I did not doze off twice, I was just pretending. Hearing tiny tiptoeing feet, I know, it’s close. Bang, Crash, “Aaaaa!” Dashing to the trap, I peer inside. A small angry face glares back. “Let me out,” it shouts. “Return my socks,” I reply. Scowling, the goblin nods. Getting dressed the next morning; I discovered my socks were back. The goblin took a shoe instead.

ENTRY POSTED FOR SAMANTHA (received on time via email)

    Flight of Fright
    By Samantha Cora
    Words: 94

Stuck in the airport on Halloween night,

Ms. Gobb from Kentucky was cursing her flight.

“How dare they be late on this day in October!

I should be home when the kids tiptoe over!”

She waited for standby to get the next seat,

Afraid that she’d miss hearing, “Boo! Trick or treat!”

    Growing impatient at Terminal 4,

She started to share famous goblin folklore.

“Surely you’ve heard of the haunted cave mines?”

Her stories sent chills down the passengers’ spines.

Then an announcement arose from her gate.

“Attention: Gobb, Lynn. Take seat number 8.”

ENTRY POSTED FOR BARB (received on time via email)

Tiptoe, Goblin and Chill/by Barb Seregi/97 words

    Tiptoe was a ghost
    Gob was, well, a Goblin.
    And Chill was a skeleton.
    Marianne was 3 days old.
    It was Halloween 1984.

Tip, Gob, and Chill were ready to scare. It was their job. They readied as best they knew how: a clean sheet for Tip, stretches for Gob, and fresh oil for Chill. They were ready to do their job, frighten little kids…boo!
As they went door to door, it worked! One lady said, “Oh my!” Another went, “Eeeeek!”

Until they got to Marianne’s house…
    Knock, knock, knock.
    Waaaaaaaaah!
    Oh no!
    Someone’s better at their job!

    Goblin Trick or Treat
    By: Susan Summers

Tiptoeing through the yard, Goblin was almost there.

Despite the chill evening, he was sweating.

This was the one night he could pretend to be human.

He didn’t want to miss out.

Goblin was at the door when trouble arrived.

    WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

“I told you to stay home,” he hissed.

The dog didn’t care, it raced towards Goblin.

    WHOMP.

Together they knocked open the front door.

    He knew this was bad.

As Goblin rushed to leave, a hand grabbed his shoulder.

    “HELP!” he yelled.

    “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

    PLUNK.

    Candy landed in his bucket.

    “Happy Halloween!”

    Goblin smiled, “SUCCESS!”

ENTRY POSTED FOR MARINA (received on time)

    Home Alone by Marina Wright

Proving to my parents that I could be responsible, I asked them to let me handle staying home alone. After consideration, they allowed me. Tiptoeing into the kitchen, I cooked

popcorn, sprinkled seasoning, and sat on the couch and turned on a cartoon. As I was about to fall asleep, the TV turned the channel to a goblin horror movie.  I tried turning it off, but it was no use. I was about to sleep, then heard the window open quietly. A chill went down my spine. It was 9:30. My parents weren’t supposed to be back until midnight…
