WOO-HOO! Let the joyous news be spread! It’s time for
The Contest: Write a children’s story about a Holiday Mishap, mix-up, miscommunication, mistake, or potential disaster (a la Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer :)). Your story may be poetry or prose, silly or serious or sweet, religious or not, based on Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or whatever you celebrate, but is not to exceed 350 words not counting the title (aren’t I being generous?! 🙂 It can be as short as you like, but no more than 350!) Did the dog knock over the Christmas Tree? Did little Johnny’s costume get grape juice all over it moments before the holiday pageant? Did the menorah go missing? Did travel arrangements get snarled or miscommunicated? Did Santa’s sleigh have to make an emergency landing? The field is wide open! Have fun! (And because so many people have mentioned this, the story does not have to be funny! You can have a holiday mishap that is serious or sweet or mysterious… Please don’t feel that you have to go the humor route! Also, because a number of people have mentioned it this time, no art notes please.)

I love it when reindeer save the day! Cute story 🙂
I'm glad the mice were honest! Honesty always comes along with cookies, right?
I really enjoy when a bit of information can be woven into a story in a natural flow. Plenty of lightning to light the way and lots of good imagery. nice work
Cute! It wasn't such a disaster after all 🙂
Santa is more human if he has to go to the toilet. I like that. 🙂 fun story with good elements of frustration before the solution. Good job
I think Blizen Jr. is the perfect name for a puppy who loves veggies and hot chocolate!
Children still know how to handle the magic of a situation and you captured that nicely in your story.
A puppy story always gets me! Cute entry.
I quite enjoyed the mishaps of the mostly well meaning squirrels and you handled the nut distraction delightfully. a good fun story with a perfect solution
Fun wordplay with O Deer and Oh dear! Santa named him well!

Nice use of onomatopoeia. Although Bumbledum andTumbledee were doing a good job, it reassuring that Santa is back in charge! 🙂

ENTRY POSTED FOR SUSANNA
George’s Christmas Present –A True Story
By Rita Antoinette Borg
“It’s Christmas morning,” I yelled to my brother and sister.
“Wake up! Wake up!”
They rubbed the sleepiness from their eyes and we rushed off
to wake up Mom and Dad in their bedroom.
“Get up! Get up!” we yelled a bit more, yanking them out
from under their warm quilts.
“Let’s open our presents,” I said, clapping my hands.
“Everything’s ready, I lit the advent wreath candles.”
“O.K, we’re up, we’re up” said Mom, still sleepy.
George, our border collie, jumped with excitement around the
bed. This was his first Christmas with my family after rescuing him from the
dog shelter.
Downstairs, we saw Santa Claus had eaten the cookies we
placed for him last night. He bought us lots of beautifully wrapped present and
placed them under the tree.
Soon, we sat listening to Mom read the story of Jesus’ birth
from the Bible.
Then we sang “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. My brother searched
the presents to find his. Meghan, the youngest, wailed and stretched her arms
to grab a present, too.
“Not yet,” said Dad, “Be patient! Everyone will get a turn
to open presents.”
“Let’s take a family picture first,” he said.
We snuggled together and said, “MERRY CHRISTMAS!” but then I
said,
“Where’s George? He’s family, too”
George jumped into
the room. He barked loud. He pulled at my pyjama top sleeve.
Then he barked and he barked and he barked, jumping.
“Calm down, George. You’ve got a present, too,” I told him,
while looking for his wrapped up bone under the tree.
But George rushed into the kitchen. He howled.
“Are you hungry, boy?” I asked, following him.
In the kitchen, the advent wreath candles I had lit roared
in flames.
“FIRE! FIRE!”
Mom and Dad ran to the kitchen.
From the burning
cupboard, Dad took out the fire extinguisher. He hurt his hand as he sprayed
the fire. It went out!
Our advent wreath
candles lay in a pile of ashes. George gave us the best Christmas present ever-
a very, very Merry and Safe Christmas. We all hugged our hero dog!
Ha! Fun twist. Love the last line 🙂
Beautiful. You did a good job of describing the stable setting.
Galloping Galoshes! I think there are ONE HUNDRED entries! Guess I'll have to make another cup of hot chocolate to fortify me as I read through them…can I make you a cup, Susanna? 🙂

Very cute! Personally, I'm glad he did it the “old way”! 🙂
A fun tale of “home sweet home”! Nice job 🙂
Funny! Poor Santa! I hope he gets a good night's sleep next Christmas.
Hugs can really make things better. Sweet story.
Very sweet and creative story Martha. Loved a young Jack Frost! Enjoyed reading it very much 🙂
Susan, that was a really clever poem – I liked it a lot!
Does anyone else have captcha comment trouble? I'm apologizing in advance to anyone who uses captcha or other forms of 'spam control'…my vision is pretty crummy and sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 tries to leave a comment…and then it doesn't tell me if the comment is being moderated…so I leave – unsure whether or not you will ever get to read what I have written. I've never used captcha – and I've never had a spam comment appear…I guess I've been lucky, because I don't have comment moderation either…and have never had a comment I wanted to delete.:)
Debbie, that was a wonderfully sweet, touching story!
That was a Fun one Kristen! Enjoyed reading it very much 🙂
Good ole Mountain Dew – the only thing that kept me awake in college as I wasn't a coffee drinker then.
