WOO-HOO! Let the joyous news be spread! It’s time for
The Contest: Write a children’s story about a Holiday Mishap, mix-up, miscommunication, mistake, or potential disaster (a la Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer :)). Your story may be poetry or prose, silly or serious or sweet, religious or not, based on Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or whatever you celebrate, but is not to exceed 350 words not counting the title (aren’t I being generous?! 🙂 It can be as short as you like, but no more than 350!) Did the dog knock over the Christmas Tree? Did little Johnny’s costume get grape juice all over it moments before the holiday pageant? Did the menorah go missing? Did travel arrangements get snarled or miscommunicated? Did Santa’s sleigh have to make an emergency landing? The field is wide open! Have fun! (And because so many people have mentioned this, the story does not have to be funny! You can have a holiday mishap that is serious or sweet or mysterious… Please don’t feel that you have to go the humor route! Also, because a number of people have mentioned it this time, no art notes please.)

And away he flew in the red velvet suit he’s worn ever since.
So now! Everyone filled with confidence about their entries? I certainly hope so after that display! Never let it be said that I’m not willing to be a fool for my art 🙂

Food and a bunch of kids–always work.
I'm so glad you were looking forward to it, Teresa! And thanks for your kind words 🙂
Oh my! “He's fallen out!” is not a phrase you want to hear about Santa! 🙂 Love that he made a Santa-shaped snow angel hole 🙂 And glad it all worked out! Thanks so much for joining in the holiday fun, Karen!
This fictional story was inspired by a true story in my life as a single mother.
Cookies for Papá Noel by Michelle Lynn Senters (350 words)
“Will he will come, Momma?” It was Rosa and Momma’s first Christmas on their own. Rosa wondered if Papá Noel came to families with no money, little food, and great sadness.
“Papá Noel will come,” assured Momma. “But we have no cookies for him.” said Rosa. Momma smiled. “Then, we will make Polvorones de Canele.”
They went into the kitchen. Rosa found the butter and sugar. Momma found the cinnamon and searched for the flour. “Oh, Rosita. We have no flour.” Rosa’s eyes brimmed with tears. “You should make your cinnamon tortillas,” Momma encouraged. “Papá Noel would love them.”
Rosa found the ingredients. She spread butter on the tortillas and sprinkled them with cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg and cayenne pepper. She cut the tortillas with the pastry wheel and placed them on a cookie sheet. Rosa wrote her Christmas wish as they baked.
“Dear Papá Noel,
I hope you like the spicy cinnamon tortillas.
Please bring Momma joy for Christmas.
Love, Rosa”
Rosa checked the tortillas. She opened the oven door and the smell of burned sugar and cayenne filled the room. “Momma! The tortillas are ruined.”
Momma pulled the pan from the oven. “Look, Rosita. There are two good pieces.”
Rosa put the brown tortillas on a plate and set it beside the letter. She went to bed with heavy sobs.
Rosa woke early Christmas morning to see if Papá Noel had come. The tortillas were gone and a small gift was left for her. “Momma! He ate my tortillas.” Rosa danced and twirled.
Just then, someone knocked on the door. Momma opened it to see people singing carols and holding gifts. “Merry Christmas,” a man said. Momma stood silent, staring into their joyful faces.
“Momma,” said Rosa. “Let them in.” Soon, the small house was filled with food, gifts, and the laughter of new friends. There was a Christmas ham, a doll and two winter coats.
“Look, Rosita,” said Momma, pointing to the food. “Flour!”
“Papá Noel really liked my tortillas.” Rosa beamed. “Yes,” said Momma through her tears of joy. “But he liked your Christmas wish even better.”
Oh, Michelle! What a wonderful story! So sweet – it brought tears to my eyes. I'm so glad Momma found some joy, and that it was Rosa who made it possible. Since it's based on real life, I hope the joy has since outweighed the sorrow! Thanks so much for this lovely entry that embodies the true spirit of the holidays!
Cute! Love the “and tuna!” 🙂
Thank you, Susanna! It was based off of true life in the fact that my daughters and I were blessed with gifts and food baskets during one particularly rough Christmas. For the story, the characters and culture were fictionalized. Thank you so much for your encouragement.
It's nice that there are people in the world who will do that for others, isn't it? 🙂
Oh my… I have tears in my eyes. I LOVE this story, Michelle!
Very touching. Thanks for sharing!
Love the surprise ending. Great rhyming pieces, too.
Excellent job! The premise is terrific: chaos to caring is very satisfying. And the rhyming is great!
So fun! Love “treading nog.”
What a cute story! The illustrations will be great. Nice job.
What a beautiful story Michelle! I'm so glad it ended as it did as well. Thankfully, there are people disguised as angels that show up just at the right time 😉

Lovely ending, that gingerbread house deserved to win!
