Roses are red
Violets are blue
Valentinies rock
And so do YOU!
Whether your characters are bubbling, bouncing, or buzzing with enthusiasm, feeling the consequences of too much enthusiasm, or wishing they could drum up some enthusiasm, the time has come for . . .
The 9th Annual Valentiny Writing Contest

~ for children’s writers ~
The Contest: Since writing for children is all about “big emotion for little people” (I forget who said that, but someone did so I put it in quotes!) and Valentine’s Day is all about emotion, write a Valentine story appropriate for children (children here defined as ages 12 and under) maximum 214 words in which someone feels enthusiastic! They can be enthusiastic in a good way or a bad way. They can be enthusiastic about a person, an event, an activity, an animal, an art project, a performance. . . anything you like!, or overly enthusiastic causing negative consequences. Sky’s the limit! Just make sure it is clearly Valentine-centered! Think beyond the obvious! Your story can be poetry or prose, sweet, funny, surprising or anything in between, but it will only count for the contest if it includes someone enthusiastic (can be the main character but doesn’t have to be) and is 214 words (get it? 2/14 for Valentine’s Day 😊 ) You can go under the word count but not over! (Title is not included in the word count.) If you are so inclined, you are welcome to enter more than one entry – just remember you’ll be competing against yourself 😊 No illustration notes please!
Post your story in the comment section below between right now this very second and Wednesday February 14th by 11:59 PM Eastern. There will be no regularly scheduled posts for the duration of the contest (Tuesday Debut or PPBF), so this post and all of your entries will stay up for everyone to enjoy. If you have difficulty with the comments, which unfortunately sometimes happens, you may email your entry to me and I’ll post it for you. If you need to send me your entry, please copy and paste your entry, including title, byline (that’s who it’s by – you 😊 – for example, by Susie Writer) and word count into the body of your email. No attachments – they will not be opened!
The Judging: over the following days, my lovely assistants and I will narrow down the entrants to around 12 top choices depending on number and quality of entries which will be posted here and voted on for a winner as soon as we can get them up. The winners and Honorable Mentions will be announced a few days after the vote. (I’m not even going to try to hazard a guess on exact dates!)
Judging criteria will include:
- Kid-appeal/Kid-friendliness – remember, this is a story for kids!
- Creativity in using enthusiasm, and success in making us feel the enthusiasm! Enthusiasm must be central to the story line, not just mentioned briefly in passing in a story about something else entirely.
- Valentine’s Day appropriateness – this is a VALENTINE story and Valentine’s Day must be central to it!
- Quality of story – we will look for basic story elements and a true story arc
- Quality of writing – use and flow of language, correctness of mechanics, excellence of rhyme and meter if you use it, PROOFREADING!
- Originality – surprise us with something new and different! 😊
- How well you followed the Submission Guidelines – agents and editors expect professionalism. This is a chance to practice making sure you read and follow specified guidelines.

Wings of Love
By Nancy D. Riley (206 words)
“This Valentine’s Day party will be wonderful to see.
Don’t you think so, Percy?” asked Ingenuity.
“I’ve invited all the rovers,” she continued from the sky,
“There’s hearts to make, cupcakes to bake, and Martian games to try.”
“I used our landing parachute to sew a heart-shaped banner.
Perseverance watch for guests with your robotic scanner.”
“You’re so enthusiastic, but you’re flying way too fast!”
Percy beeped the words out as a Martian wind whirled past.
“Oh, help me!” cried the copter as she slammed against a rock.
Her systems sparked and then went dark. She suffered quite a shock.
“What can I do?” the copter wailed. “My rotor blade won’t spin.
Without the tip to balance it, I’ll never soar again!”
“Don’t lose hope,” said Percy. He patted Ginny’s blade.
He turned to all their party guests, “Does someone know first aid?”
Lasers flashed and hammers banged. Pliers pinched and twisted.
Every rover did their part and Percy—he assisted.
They welded onto Ginny’s blade a patch shaped like a heart.
She gave her motor one more try and felt her rotors start.
Ginny rose into the sky and hovered far above.
She smiled at all her robot friends who gave her wings of love.
Awesome idea – and a great STEM tie-in!
Thanks so much for reading!
Interesting combination of robots and love, a purely human thing. Well done! I’m #34.
Thanks for stopping by!
This is super! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Clever, original, informative, and fun.
Thanks, Corine!
Nancy, great story centering on kindness! ❤️
Thanks so much!
Nancy, what a nice combination of social emotional skills, sci fi and Valentine sentiment.
Thank you so much!
CHEESED TO MEET YOU
by Lynsey Folkman
145 words
A slice of heart-shaped pizza
opened up his eyes.
He stared up at the pizza box
as someone yelled, “Surprise!”
The lid was flung wide open–
a party filled his view.
“I’m sure that I can get some love
from someone in this crew!”
He puffed out his saucy chest,
and smiled a cheesy grin
as a happy crew of partiers
all started to dig in.
“I know I’ll get picked next!”
he thought as piece-by-piece
the pizza all around was grabbed,
leaving only grease.
His enthusiasm waned.
Was he doomed to be alone?
He shut his eyes and cried.
He released a little moan.
Suddenly he jolted
as next to him he looked
and saw the most amazing slice of
pizza ever cooked.
“I sure am cheesed to meet you!
Be my valentine?”
They cuddled up. They shut the lid.
And everything was fine.
Awesome Teddy for trying.
I don’t know what went wrong this is for Kimberly Zhuo.
Pizza love! Good luck.
Sweet and fun!
Loved the line … “Cheesed to meet you”
🙂
Very cute! Cheesed to meet you – love it!

“It. is. Completely. Covered. In. Human. Red,” said Inlovil into his monitor.
An electric shock pulsed wildly. His hand involuntarily grabbed his chest.
He had studied a human phenomenon, love, imagining experiencing the impossible. He craved more shocks, but if anyone suspected him of meddling in the forbidden, he would be disengaged and discarded.
He zoomed in and followed astronomical numbers of odd-shaped
symmetrical triangles shooting in all directions on the screen. Floods of pulses raced through every internal circuit, causing unfamiliar, uplifted strains from the sides of his mouth to meet the hearing devices on the sides of his head. Fearing a facial detection discovery by his superior, who at any minute would return to monitor him, he rebooted his circuits.
Even after the reboot, the electric pulses and facial distortion remained. Strange scripts materialized inside the strange shapes until one large, sun-star colored shape appeared with hand-like protrusions folded over each side. In a scramble, he typed the script on his wrist’s keyboard to save it.
A human face with curled appendices on its head and bright eyes and bright lips came into sight holding the shape. “I love you.” Incomprehensible sounds. Instantly, he didn’t care if he was thrown into the discard pile. In love, his eyes locked together with the human’s.
Big feelings for this bot!
Glad the bot had this experience!!
This reminds me of I Robot. Kids love Bots. I’ve read most of Isaac Asimov’s books. AI is here to stay and learning more every day. Good luck!

Creating a Valentine’s Card out of Love and compassion
word count 214
Teddy went to his house and saw Nadine crying. “What’s wrong?” asked Teddy.
“No boy likes me,” said Nadine.
Teddy hugged her. “There’s plenty of people who like you!”
“They only like me as a friend and I want a boyfriend,” said Nadine.
Teddy stuck his tongue out. “That’s gross.”
Nadine laughed. “Obviously, not to me!”
They watch TV a bit later. Her bottom lip quivered as she watched and he noticed.
“That’s it!’’ he thought as he sprinted to her room. He looked for her yearbook and he flipped through it. Teddy saw a handsome guy whose name is Adrian.
When he got to his room, he made her a Valentine’s Day card. The card was a red heart on top of a pink heart. He drew flowers and hearts in yellow because it’s her favorite color.
He wrote: Dear Nadine, you rock! I like you. Let’s date!- Adrian.
Then, he slipped it in the mail slot.
Nadine gathered the mail later and read the card. She had a happy chance and laughed ‘til she cried. Teddy ran toward her.
“Thanks, Teddy, for the love that went into it. I recognize your handwriting ..”
“You’ll get to be liked when you meet the right guy!”
She gave him a thumbs up and a hug.
Aww, what a sweet story! Good luck!
Sweet 🥰
Nicely done, Tom! Kids love play on words like this. Your story helps them see 1-person can pull away from the pack and do something different, which brings others in.
Is this for me, The Dullies? I’ll take it and say thank you. But maybe there’s another Tom on here that should thank you. 🙂
I am humbled by the incredible entries. Fascinating imaginations. What a treat. And a stark reminder of how much I have to learn to become a better writer. The stories, poems, and talent are like wonderful journeys to new worlds. Thank you. 🙂
Very clever. And it seems that the classmates have been very accepting!
A very new and creative group of friends and the “wings of love” ending was so sweet.
This story is so clever and unique. I really enjoyed reading it.
