Why I Like This Book: This lovely, lyrical picture book uses layers of sensory description to make the seasons come alive. Snow hushes, spring robins sing “cheerily-cheerily-cheer-up”, the sound of bees makes “teeth tingle”, tiny grains of summer sand “crowd toes”, and the waves “SHHhh-CRSHHhh”. Young readers will experience each of the seasons through all of their senses – tasting hot dogs and peaches, smelling sunscreen and woodsmoke, hearing seagulls and squirrel chatter, and feeling the touch of the different kinds of wind each season brings. A quiet, beautiful, perfect anytime read book for every shelf!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do 😊

You got me at the title! And once I knew more, even more excited to get this book in my hands! Congratulations, Janice and Chris, and thanks as always, Susanna.
I am always glad to share wonderful books, Sue! When I read a book I love, I instantly want everyone else to read it, too! 🙂
Thank you, Sue! So glad you liked the title and I hope you enjoy the book!
When I read about the senses the MC uses to describe the seasons, I knew I would love to read it and explore the senses when reading it to my kids. Great idea. Love it already.
Thanks, Susana. Kids have really enjoyed exploring the touch boxes and scent jars I’ve shared with them and have had fun identifying how the items felt and smelled.
What a fun way to explore the seasons and I love your activities, Susanna.
Thanks, Maria! The activities were actually provided by Jan! This is two weeks in a row you’ve caught mistakes! What would I do without you? Apparently I need a proofreader! 🙂
I’m glad you liked the activities, Maria!
I love this! I often don’t stop to experience nature with all my senses, so this is a great reminder!
It IS a great reminder, Jodie! To us as writers as well! So important to use all your senses when creating books for young readers!
Thanks, Jodie! I have sensory exploration activities during my interactive reading of the book and the kids are so excited to explore using their senses of touch and smell and hearing!
This looks lovely! Raschka’s dreamy illustrations are stunning, and that lyrical language is so evocative. Whether I win a copy or not, this is one I need to read and share.
The text and art complement each other so well, don’t they, Patricia? And I love the language. The way she described the waves sounds was one of my favorite moments!
Thank you, Patricia!
Can’t wait to see (and experience) this one!
You will love it, Barb! 🙂
I hope you enjoy it!
The 5 senses. Perfect. I love it and I love how this pb can be used across the curriculum. I’m heading out the door in a couple of minutes. I now have a heightened awareness to use my 5 senses. Thank you!♥️
When you get back, you can tell us what your 5 senses experienced, Robin! 🙂
That’s great!
Thanks so much for highlighting I Hear the Snow, I Smell the Sea on Perfect Picture Book Friday, Susanna!
My pleasure, Jan! It’s such a lovely book!
Looks like a beautiful book with fun, relatable experiences!
One of the reasons I love it, Kim, is that not all kids live where there is snow, or get to go to the beach, etc, so this book gives them a glimpse of what hat experience is like on a sensory level!
So glad you like it, Kim!
Absolutely love the the lyrical approach to the changing seasons. This is one to add to my bookshelf and share with others. Congratulations!
I’m glad you like it, Kathryn! I think it’s such a beautiful book on every level. And apparently I’m in good company since it received more that one starred review 🙂
Thank you, Kathryn!
”cheerily-cheerily-cheer-up”
With colder, darker days ahead, I plan to stay cheerful with these wonderful words. Thanks, Janice!
Excellent plan! 🙂
That’s great! And with colder weather the wren’s song “tea-kettle, tea-kettle” tells us to brew a warm cup of our favorite warm drink!
I love everything about this book and the activities you mentioned takes me back to student teaching in kindergarten! I did my week of lessons on my own about the five senses. 😊
Such great memories.
Isn’t wonderful that there are so many amazingly great picture books in the world, Laura? If only you’d had this one when you were student teaching! 🙂
This book will connect readers to the world around them and beg them to be in the moment as they use their own senses while outside. I’m excited to read this book.
It’s a wonderful book, Danielle, and I think especially in today’s world where some kids don’t get as much opportunity to experience nature it will be a lovely way for them to engage with it.
What a lovely book for all the senses! The illustrations alone are so bright and cheerful! Congratulations!
Oh, this does, indeed, sound like a lovely, lyrical book, Susanna. I’m enthralled by the sensory aspect, too. And those illustrations! Gorgeous! Truly a perfect picture book!
Wow! This certainly sounds like a wonderful, lyrical PB! The inclusion of the “senses” is an added bonus! ❤️📖
What a beautifully relatable and lyrical story. The seasons are such a joy to explore through all the senses!
What great beyond-the-book activities you included!
The senses that are involved in this book-wonderful! Congratulations, Jan! So colorful and engaging!
Such a creative title. Cant wait to read this one!
