Boy, did this week fly by! I can’t believe it’s Perfect Picture Book Friday already!
But it is, and I’m so glad, because I have a book I’ve been wanting to share for nearly a year and this seems like the perfect time for it.
I love hummingbirds. They are so tiny and beautiful and amazing! Here on Blueberry Hill they usually arrive back from their winter in warmer climes sometime around the first week of May (which, you may have noticed, is right around the corner!) So, I thought what better time to share this beautiful book? If you’re not a hummingbird lover yet, you will be by the time you’ve finished Iza Trapani’s lovely book! 😊

Why I Like This Book: Although this book is nonfiction, it reads like a story. Written in Iza Trapani’s signature perfect rhyme, it is such fun to read aloud! Young readers will be entertained by the hummingbird’s antics and by the child’s delighted reaction to this tiny, zippy little friend. Since Iza is both author and illustrator, she also created gorgeous art that gives young readers so much to explore and absorb. The size of the hummingbird is shown by seeing it in comparison to the feeder, flowers, the child, and insects, so just through the art, children will gain an understanding of what kind of space these little birds take up in the world. The passing seasons are indicated by what the child is wearing. The drawings are beautiful and uncluttered, but still manage to show lots of important details. The facts sprinkled throughout the text are straightforward and easy to understand, conveying information in a way that is extremely accessible to young readers. Everything about this lovely book is engaging and appealing! A wonderful addition to any shelf!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do 😊
