Why I Like This Book: This is such a sweet, fun story! Bear wants a book of his own so much, and Ellen, his devoted friend, does her best to help him get one. Since schools, libraries, and bookstores are not known for allowing bears inside, Ellen and Bear come up with various disguises – my favorite is the blueberry bush 😊 – but somehow Bear is always found out! In the end, [SPOLER ALERT – STOP READING IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!] their solution is to work together to make Bear a book of his own and, guess what? It’s the book you’re reading – A Book For Bear. So cleverly done! The art is colorful, warm and inviting, and Bear’s expressions are so cute. Celebrating a love of reading and writing and stories, and the value of friendship, this is a lovely story for any bookshelf!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do 😊

Ellen Ramsey’s love of reading and writing led her to careers as a teacher, technical writer, and author. She loves to write imaginative and humorous stories and poetry. She also writes nonfiction articles about her favorite creatures—birds, bees, butterflies, squirrels, chipmunks, and flying squirrels. Her debut picture book, A Book for Bear, illustrated by MacKenzie Haley, celebrates friendship and love of reading, inspires creativity, and encourages children to create books of their very own. The book received the Moonbeam Award for the Best First Picture Book, was nominated for a Keystone State Literacy Association Elementary Book Award, and was a Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library selection.

Happy almost book birthday, Ellen! This is such an adorable book!
It really is super cute, Kim! Have you read it? I wasn’t kidding when I said my favorite disguise was the blueberry bush – it makes me laugh every time! 🙂
Congratulations Ellen and Bear on your three-year anniversary of reading together!
Such a nice anniversary to get to celebrate, Patricia! 🙂
Bears and books, what a perfect mashup! This is a super cute book! Thanks for sharing.
It’s SO cute, Christy! Bear is so earnest in his desire for a book of his own, and Ellen is such a good friend to him to keep trying to find a way to get him what he wants! 🙂
This is so sweet! I wonder, did you have illustrator notes about the disguises or leave them to the illustrator?
That is a great question, Jodie! I hope Ellen will stop by and answer!
I included in the text lines like “Ellen and a furry superhero,” “Ellen and a blueberry bush,” and “Ellen and a furry giant.” The way illustrator MacKenzie Haley portrayed Bear’s costumes is absolutely brilliant–I particularly love the blueberry bush disguise! MacKenzie also added lots of visual details like a chipmunk on the title page pulling a red wagon of books. Chipmunk also has guest appearances in several places in the book. The surprise of having the book “in disguise” was created by MacKenzie, the editor, and the art director; it’s fun to remove the dust jacket and reveal the final surprise of the book!
This story is wonderful. Bears and books-love it!
I know, Sheri! Love bears, love books, it’s all so good!
I love this book and have used it as a mentor text!
I bet Ellen will be thrilled to know that, Trine!
❣️
Thanks, Trine. I’m thrilled to know this! Have you downloaded the activity sheets that are in a PDF presented on my website? They present lots of great summer projects for kids, including how to create a book of your very own.
Wow! So timely for me. My new grandson born just this month is Wade Bexar (pronounced Bear). I will be buying this for him! And congratulations, Ellen!
He will love it, Barb! 🙂
Thanks, Barbara. What fun that his name is pronounced Bear. When Wade is older, I hope he will enjoy the activity sheets that are downloadable from my website–drawing activities, word games, and best of all, how to create a book of your very own.
Has it been 3 years already? I still remember clearly when it came out (and I can barely remember what I had for dinner yesterday…LOL). Such a sweet book!
I know that feeling, T! Where DOES the time go? It is such a sweet book!
Thanks, Teresa. It’s hard for me to realize it’s been 3 years. Fortunately, I just retired and can now spend more time promoting Bear’s book plus writing more books and articles and poetry for children’s magazines.
What an adorable story! I love the twist that the story ends up being the book they create for Bear.
I think my grandkids books mostly come from your Tues and Fri’s picks. You definitely can pick them!
Thanks Susannah for sharing with us and Ellen for your sweet and creative story! Happy 3rd book birthday!
I’m so glad to know that my Tuesday and Friday picks are helpful to you, Elyssa! That makes my day 🙂
Love the hooks—bear, books, and friendship. Such a sweet story. Congratulations on your upcoming book birthday #3, Ellen!
I know, Armineh! So much to love about this book!
Thanks, Armineh. Hope that you enjoy reading the book!
I love when the palette for the illustrations is NOT the usual choice! Will be looking for it!
Yes, I really like the choices in this one!
Thanks, Julie. I think MacKenzie Haley did a brilliant job on the illustrations, especially Bear’s disguises!
Great choice for PPBF! Ahh! Bears and books…perfect💕
I agree, Susan 🙂
🐻
Thanks! So glad you share my love of books and bears!
A “beary” sweet story! Thank you for sharing your story with us!
I’m glad you like it, Mindy!
Thanks, Mindy. I particularly love bear puns!
This sounds delightful! I’m rather sorry that I read the spoiler, because I didn’t predict that terrific ending. I’ll enjoy seeing how the events build up to it.
It’s very fun, Janet, and the illustrations are delightful!
Thanks, Janet. Hope you enjoy seeing how Bear figures out the perfect way to have a book of his very own. Also, when you have a copy of the book, please enjoy the final surprise–the book itself is in “disguise” so remove the dust jacket to enjoy this surprise.
Happy Nearly There Book Birthday for Ellen and Bear! What a cute story.
SO cute, Sue! And so cleverly done as a story within a story!
This book sounds so fun! Love the idea and the adorable illustrations. Happy, happy birthday!🎁
It’s really a cute one, Sandra!
To echo the comments in the introduction, I also think this book is very cute. A person could do worse than to look further into this very bearable item. I know, very punny! Does being male give me an excuse to make dad jokes? LOL 🙂
It is beary cute, Art, and you can make unbearable dad jokes whenever you like 🙂
Art and Susanna, Needless to say, I’m particularly fond of unbearable jokes!
A book birthday celebration! PPBF with cake! How lovely, and I can’t believe it’s been 3 years.
Gosh, Laura, I just realized I didn’t supply cake! Where was my head? I guess I was thinking the birthday isn’t quite here yet, so it’s a little early. But is it EVER too early for cake?! 🙂
No problem, we can always wait for cake! 🎂
In other news, my book mail arrived yesterday and the doorbell rang which truly caused Charlie to lose his mind! I’m not sure what he thought was happening, but he almost threw himself down the stairs at the front door! 🤷🏼♀️ He’d been inside all day so I guess he was hoping it was a friend!
Maybe he was hoping for CAKE!!!! 🙂
Cake features prominently in the book birthday party that Bear & Ellen are planning.
Happy almost 3rd book birthday! This is such an adorable book! I know a little girl who would love a copy! Congratulations, Ellen!
Oh, that’s lovely, Angie! Thank you for sharing Ellen’s book with your little someone!
Thanks, Angie. Hope she enjoys the book and the activity sheets from my website. Also, hope she enjoys the final surprise in the book, which she can discover by removing the book’s dust jacket!
Yes! Thanks, Ellen!
This sounds like such a cute story! Congrats on 3 years!
Thanks from Bear & me. Hope you enjoy Bear’s book!
It’s great to get in print in the first place, and great to stay in print! 🙂
Such a sweet story. Who wouldn’t want to help a bear as cute as this one?!
I know, right, Marty?! Everyone should have the perfect book 🙂
Thanks, Marty! MacKenzie Haley did a superb job making Bear a friendly book-loving bear!
